Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, or reshaping of the nose, is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed each year. Many patients are dissatisfied with the shape of their nose or have seen changes to their profile following trauma to the face. Other patients may seek rhinoplasty to relieve difficulty breathing. Rhinoplasty can reduce a hump on the nose, straighten the nose, and reduce the size of the nasal tip and nostrils.

Candidates

Good candidates for rhinoplasty will have specific goals and qualities about their nose that they want to change. They should be in good general health. Patients who suffer from difficulty breathing should discuss this with Dr. Kim, as patients seeking a smaller nose can sometimes find this affects breathing. Dr. Kim will discuss techniques with you which can sometimes help with this shortness of breath.

Procedure

Dr. Kim prefers to use a closed rhinoplasty technique for most of his patients’ procedures. This closed rhinoplasty technique uses incisions entirely inside the nose, unless the patient wishes to make the nostrils smaller. Rhinoplasty is performed while the patient is under anesthesia, and exact techniques will vary based on each patient’s needs and goals. Internal incisions are used to shave the dorsal hump and to reduce the size of enlarged cartilage. Oftentimes, Dr. Kim will use sutures to narrow the tip of the nose and to reposition a drooping nasal tip. Patients with wide nasal bones will have them narrowed at the base. If a patient seeks to repair enlarged nostrils, they can be narrowed with incisions made in the crease between the nostrils and cheek. All incisions are then closed with dissolving sutures.

Recovery

Patients should not experience significant pain following a rhinoplasty. For a week following the procedure, patients should wear an external splint at all times to protect the nose and hold the new position of the bone. After one week, the splint is worn only at night. Patients will experience swelling and bruising over the nose and cheeks for one to two weeks. After one week, patients can use makeup to cover these areas of swelling and discoloration.
